On the Problem of Resolution of Singularities in Positive Characteristic

چکیده

Introduction. The embedded resolution of singular algebraic varieties of dimension > 3 defined over fields of characteristic p > 0 is still an open problem. The inductive argument which works in characteristic zero fails for positive characteristic. The main obstruction is the failure of maximal contact, which, in turn, manifests in the occurence of wild singularities and kangaroo points at certain stages of a sequence of blowups. At these points the standard characteristic zero resolution invariant increases instead of decreasing. The induction breaks down. No remedy has been found yet.

Rings of Singularities

This paper is a slightly revised version of an introduction into singularity theory corresponding to a series of lectures given at the ``Advanced School and Conference on homological and geometrical methods in representation theory'' at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Miramare - Trieste, Italy, 11-29 January 2010. We show how to associate to a triple of posit...

Wild Singularities and Kangaroo Points for the Resolution of Singularities in Positive Characteristic

Wild singularities are the main obstacle for applying the characteristic zero proof of resolution of singularities to the case of characteristic p > 0. They cause at certain points of the exceptional divisor of blowups, so called kangaroo points, the increase of the resolution invariant. This increase destroys the induction argument. In the article, we determine the structure of wild singularit...

ON THE PROBLEM OF RESOLUTION OF SINGULARITIES IN POSITIVE CHARACTERISTIC (Or: A proof we are still waiting for)

Assume that, in the near future, someone can prove resolution of singularities in arbitrary characteristic and dimension. Then one may want to know why the case of positive characteristic is so much harder than the classical characteristic zero case. Our intention here is to provide this piece of information for people who are not necessarily working in the field. A singularity of an algebraic ...

Kangaroo Points and Oblique Polynomials in Resolution of Positive Characteristic

In September 2008, Heisuke Hironaka gave a series of lectures at the Clay Mathematics Institute explaining his program for the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic [Hi1]. In the course of the lectures, Hironaka relied on results of the author from an unpublished manuscript written in 2003 [Ha1]. The quoted results investigate the main obstruction for resolution in positive cha...

Why the characteristic zero proof of resolution of singularities fails in positive characteristic

This is – for the time being – the last of a series of papers of the author on resolution of singularities. This series started with a collection of obstacles which make resolution in arbitrary dimension and characteristic difficult [Ha 1]. It was followed by a comprehensive study of Hironaka’s proposal for surface resolution in positive characteristic [Ha 2], in order to see whether this appro...
